Here is a story from Salcombe, England After landing in Scotland and taking the train down to
Salcombe, we moved into our base on the hill. When the German planes made their night bombing runs over Salcombe, we were to go outside the base and lay in the ditches. When the first raid occurred after we settled in, everyone headed for the ditches outside the wall. After the raid, everyone coming back into the barracks caused a commotion and lots of noise. This woke me up. I asked Johnny Oates, who had top bunk, what is all the noise about and he told me we had an air raid. I had slept right through it. You can be (sure) I was in the ditch every raid after that.
